GUTS: Bleeding me dry

After the hit “Driver’s License” and successful album “Sour,” which I looped on Spotify playlist for months, Olivia Rodrigo’s fanbase and music enthusiasts have been eagerly waiting for the release of her new music.

When “GUTS” was finally announced this August, Rodrigo entered the spotlight again as a darling of the music industry. Teasers for “bad idea right?” and “vampire” immediately started trending on TikTok and Instagram even before the full album release.

Revealing to listeners a new episode of her life, “GUTS” was certainly an emotionally vibrant and explosive album, diving straight into a reflection of heartbreak, fame, and navigating the complexities of adolescent life.

Noticeably, “GUTS” does not follow the conventional pop trend, but still integrates empathetic lyrics that resonate with youthful listeners. Rounding out the intro with a pause to build anticipation that sets the stage for the emotional upheaval to come. Rodrigo kicked off the album with old school vibes. Her vocal prowess, with a mix of shouty screams ending with hype group chants, effectively capturing the essence of the “all-american b*tch” anthem while delving into some deeply personal themes. The album showcases a well-crafted structure, balancing between the chaos and the pursuit of serenity. It demonstrates an enhanced version of Rodrigo’s previous album with finer vocals, more dynamic complexities in the lyrics, and  a greater integration of spontaneous elements that thrill the listener

The track that stood out to me the most, and that I think is underrated, was “lacy,” which struck me with a nostalgic touch. Rodrigo fearlessly shares the rawness and vulnerability in the lyrics to create the deep sense of authenticity that enabled me to connect and find solace in the music, with the soothing melody that captures the collective emotions of listeners. Surely it was one of the sweetest tortures one could bear.

Another song displaying a polar opposite feeling, “get him back!,” was also one of my favorites. Its extreme melodic contours captivated me in a sense that made me feel somehow empowered. Other tracks encapsulate the goofy, charismatic and sometimes a little crazy Gen-Z spirit — lyrics “two plus two equals five” and “I just tripped and fell into his bed” shock the audience while capturing the intensity, passion and desires for personal empowerment in the face of adversity. Whether it’s the calm and introspective moments or the shouty screams of defiance, Rodrigo’s vocals powerfully capture the authenticity of the album’s themes. Personally, I think “GUTS” excelled in the exploration of emotional and vengeful energy through dynamic music.
