A&Eats: Pause classics

Let’s get back to the basics. Yes, the Pause has fun specials, but new pizzas and shakes of the month come and go. Mac and cheese pizza is exciting and intriguing. Dyno Berry Blast shakes are creative, even if I’m personally not big on fruit ice cream. You can fight me on that but I’ll never change my mind.

For the most part, these specials are just weird enough that you want to try them once, but you’re not going to get them every time you go. But the Pause also has some real classics, like the Pause cookie and ice cream. I went deep undercover* to find the best ways to mix it up and get the most out of this old favorite.

So yes, the good old Pause cookie and ice cream. First-years, take note if you haven’t tried this yet. And upper-class-people, you need to rework your priorities if YOU haven’t. I remember having this delicacy for the very first time as a prospective student when my host Britta Webber ’19 told me I had to try it.

She was right. There is almost nothing better than a warm, chocolate chip Pause cookie, with creamy vanilla ice cream swirled on top.

It’s not officially on the Pause menu, but is a very common student order. If you’ve never ordered one, go to the counter, and ask for a Pause cookie. Then ask them to put the soft-serve ice cream flavor of your choice on top. It costs the same as a cookie and ice cream sold  separately.

Without further ado, here are five ways to make the most out of your Pause cookie and ice cream:

Ask for a twist or chocolate on top. Okay, duh. But sometimes you default to the vanilla or the chocolate or the twist, whatever your favorite is, and you don’t try it with the other ice cream. Well, I say go for it! As someone who’s tried all three, none of them will disappoint.

Put chocolate sauce on top. This is a little more high-maintenance because you have to actually bring your own chocolate sauce. (Which, by the way, I have done on multiple occasions. While labor-intensive, it is quite good). The chocolate just adds another layer of je ne sais quoi.

Ask for a shake instead of ice cream. Throw the cookie at the bottom of your favorite Pause shake and voilà! A new discovery and a new favorite dessert.

Ask for your soft serve in a glass, instead of a bowl. This depends on who’s working, and now that I’ve written it someone’s probably going to go adjust the employee handbook. Sometimes, if you ask for your ice cream in a glass, they’ll give it to you that way. And when you get the soft-serve in a glass, you recieve  about twice as much. You’re welcome. And no, when I’ve done this, I have not been charged more.

Get two cookies, and make it into an ice cream sandwich. Ya, I think this is pretty self-explanatory. Just have them place a second cookie on top, then either pick it up like an actual sandwich (messy) or use a spoon (less fun).

*Of course, by deep undercover, I mean not at all undercover. I just went to the Pause. As myself.
